The Susceptible Now by Tyshawn Sorey Trio

The Susceptible Now is the new release from drummer Tyshawn Sorey’s trio, with Aaron Diehl on piano and Harish Raghavan on bass. They present 4 long tracks: (1) the McCoy Tyner classic “Peresina” from his album Expansions; (2) “A Chair in the Sky” (composed with Charles Mingus) from the Joni Mitchell album Mingus; (3) “Your Good Lies,” from the contemporary soul group Vividry; and (4) “Bealtine” by Brad Mehldau. The Susceptible Now will be out October 11, on Pi Recordings.

This album takes its time—a lot of time—as if time no longer mattered, neither for the musicians nor for the listener. And Tyshawn Sorey, like a maestro, shows us that the number of strokes doesn’t determine slowness, nor does lightness exclude intensity.

The music unfolds with remarkable delicacy, as subtle as only true excellency can achieve. It creates a moment where time seems to disappear, leaving us in a space where well-being is directly connected to its gentle pace. Urgency vanishes, the end becomes irrelevant, and the journey feels like the only thing that matters. Each instant is filled with pleasure, carefree and untethered from everything that isn’t this music happening here and now.

The album invites us to fully immerse ourselves in the moment, with attention that’s complete yet never stressed. This is where the music’s true magic lies: it captivates, yet never overwhelms. It draws us in with its calmness, proving that a tranquil soundscape doesn’t limit the richness of the playing.

Tyshawn Sorey, Aaron Diehl, and Harish Raghavan’s performances, like an intricate embroidery, are balanced with delicacy and precision. It’s in this careful attention to detail that the beauty of the music truly shines. The playing is always measured, with graceful approach, and never sacrificing the intensity of feeling.

In the end, this is an album that offers a unique experience, perfectly poised between a possible evasive or focused listening. It transports us to a place where equilibrium feels infinite, as though time itself has ceased to exist.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

“Predictably, Sorey completely deconstructs these compositions, extracting and shuffling sections of the original recordings while arranging them into elaborate forms that morph constantly and unpredictably […] It’s yet another manifestation of Sorey’s profound musical wizardry.”
