Brisk by Juli Deák sits right on the border between contemporary classical, jazz improvisation, and experimental sound art.
As Colin Stetson did with All This I Do for Glory, Brisk dives into the physicality of music-making. With only carefully placed microphones, Deák produces multiple layers of sound at once. The amplified breathing, the constant rhythmic clicks of the flute keys forming a pulse, and the use of circular breathing create an intense sense of proximity while enhancing the instrument’s sonic possibilities.
But while Stetson was exploring in All This I Do for Glory the rhythmic possibilities of the setup, in Brisk, Deák seems to lean more into its poetic side, even creating space for sounds usually kept at the margins, such as breathy tones or loud inhalations, to become fully part of the composition.
And so, one seems to feel the entire reality of the instrument, its world, what it is like to be floating, held and pressured, embraced and released.
The result is very intimate, but it never gets too close or uncomfortable, quite the opposite, as everything here feels more peaceful, less maximalist.
So, peacefully, you let yourself sink into the music, and you can almost feel as if you were standing on the flute, a miniature version of yourself, experiencing it from within, in its full reality, its life, its colors, its vibrations. At times, the instrument becomes a forest of sounds that surrounds and envelops you, taking on an extraordinary dimension. And yet, it remains entirely real: this approach simply reveals what would otherwise stay invisible.
Brisk offers a beautiful experience, one you can inhabit. Truly stunning.
