from Beyond The Wall
(Nonesuch)
Beyond the Wall is dedicated to “the great master, McCoy Tyner.” Kenny Garrett occasionally played with him and intended to record this album with him. Unfortunately, due to a simple scheduling conflict, it did not happen. Yet, you can clearly hear that the album is influenced by both McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane.
Beyond the Wall was also inspired by Kenny’s interest in and visits to Mainland China. The result is a perfect mixture of avant-garde jazz and traditional Asian music.
Kenny Garrett: alto saxophone (1–4, 6–9), piano (5); Mulgrew Miller: piano ( 1–4, 6–9); Pharoah Sanders: tenor saxophone (1–4, 6–8); Bobby Hutcherson: vibraphone (3, 4, 6–8); Robert Hurst III: bass; Brian Blade: drums; Rogerio Boccato: percussion (1, 3–8); Jonathan Gandelsman: violin (5); Neil Humphrey: cello (5); Guowei Wang: erhu (5); Susan Jolles: harp (5); Nedelka Echols: vocals (3, 4, 6, 8); Arlene Lewis, Dawn Caveness, Genea Martin, Geovanti Steward, Kevin Wheatley: vocals (6, 8)
