Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin Project

Jazz rarely brings tears to one’s eyes, but here is an exception. The Coin Coin project expresses the most dramatic human emotions ever heard on jazz albums. It reminds us of what should never have been, what should no longer exist, and that humanity should be one.

So, if one of humanity’s tragedies is its inability to recognize itself and to understand that the other is oneself, then the Coin Coin project brings this tragedy to life deep within us, making it–through illumination mainly–accessible essentially.

Instead of ranking them, we’re highlighting outstanding jazz created by talented artists who have enriched the genre. These albums showcase a range of styles and sounds that make jazz so special. Best Jazz Albums of 2023

The following selection is our definitive “Best Jazz Albums of 2023” list. The selection is divided into albums featuring solos, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, and larger ensembles, with three selections per category, for a total of 21 albums. We also added one category for “Artist of the Year”, and one for “Archive of the Year”, thereby adding two albums to the final selection, for a grand total of 23 albums that sum up how great 2023 was for jazz.
