The selection is divided into albums featuring solos, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, and larger ensembles, with three selections per category, for a total of 18 albums. We also have one category for “Artist of the Year”, and one for “Archive of the Year”, thereby adding two albums to the final selection, for a grand total of 20 albums that sum up how great 2024 was for jazz.

The Bliss of Bliss, Pat Thomas’s latest solo-piano album, was recorded live at Cave12 in Geneva, Switzerland, on 31 March 2024 by Nadan Rojnic and released on 29 May 2025 by the Konnekt label.
Branches is a live recording of Evan Parker and Bill Nace in duet at Cafe OTO. Recorded on May 25, 2024, with Parker on soprano saxophone and Nace on a two-string Taishogoto, it was released as a split between Open Mouth Records and Otoroku on May 23, 2025.

In the ‘50s, the singer-saxophonist Jannu Vaz formed a band with two soon-to-be extremely influential artists in Pakistani jazz music, saxophonists Alex Rodrigues and Dominic Gonsalvez. Rodrigues believed this band to be the first jazz group in pre-independence Pakistan. In the ’50s and ’60s, American jazz legends Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Dizzy Gillespie performed in concerts and gigs, which was crucial. These gigs allowed for collaborations across cultures.
