This list provides an overview of all Keith Jarrett’s solo piano recordings, as well as all his solo piano concerts, and how much material ECM is still sitting on and will hopefully release someday.
1972-1997
“It started out maybe as a result of recording ‘Facing You;’ I can’t remember, but it started out, I remember, at the Heidelberg Jazz Festival [June 1972 – see hereunder], where I was, supposedly, I wasn’t very well-known, I guess, and I came out and did a solo thing, and it was tunes, but I started to connect them somehow. Like, I’d have these transitional parts that connected everything, and then that somehow just moved slowly into the expanded solo concert, where there are no songs whatsoever, and everything is improvised on the spot.” — Keith Jarrett about the idea of long solo piano concerts
We must open this list with 1972. It started with his first solo piano album recording, Facing You, which was released in March 1972 and continued with what is considered to be Keith Jarrett’s first solo concert in the traditional sense, his performance at Stadthalle, in Heidelberg, Germany, on June 4, 1972 (or maybe the June 2 or June 3, according to Peter Elsdon).
After Facing You, 21 more albums followed: four other studio recordings and 17 concert recordings. Only two extra miscellaneous recordings have so far been released, bringing the total number of Keith Jarrett solo piano albums to 24. All of them but one were published by ECM Records.
By 1997, a total of four more studio recordings were released, and nine more concerts were recorded, eight of which were released during 1972-1997.
We have to end this list with 1997 because otherwise, the list of albums and concerts would be far too long for a single article. Also, in the 1990s, Keith Jarrett began to experience symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and in 1997 he had to cancel all his representations. The second period of his career, from 1998 to 2017, is available here: Keith Jarrett – Piano Solos (1998-2017)
Piano Solos – Studio
Facing You
(ECM) Release Date Mars 1, 1972
Every adventure, even the most epic ones, has a beginning. Keith Jarrett’s first solo piano album recording was Facing You. This also marked his first release with ECM Records.
Staircase
(ECM) Release Date May 1, 1977
Recorded in May 1976, Staircase is Keith Jarrett fourth solo piano release following Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne and The Köln Concert.
“In contrast to his earlier studio effort, Facing You, Jarrett elides romantic titles in favor of four singly marked suites in this entirely improvised studio session. Like every carefully chosen word of a William Carlos Williams verse, Jarrett’s equally lyrical insights plough to the heart of the matter like no others.” — ECM
G. I. Gurdjieff: Sacred Hymns
(ECM) Release Date September 1, 1980
“From the titles alone, one might think of these pieces as incidental music, when in fact the music is its own ritual, a collection of hymns to itself in a mise-en-abyme of faith. It is a multifaceted jewel of loosely bound energy that finds joy in emptiness. With due assurance and temerity, Jarrett proves it’s not music that is its own religion, but religion that is its own music.” — ECM
Invocations / The Moth And The Flame
(ECM) Release Date May 27, 1981
“This album, as much as any other in the Jarrett landscape, shows a deep commitment to personal development. He plows these instruments like the fields of his very heart. He is that moth, drawn to a musical flame which, rather than burning him, fuels his humanity all the more.” — ECM
Piano Solos – Concerts
Here is a list of his solo concerts, highlighting those which already have an album released. During this period, most of the concerts were played in the USA (114) and Japan (43). In Europe, Keith Jarret played mainly in Germany (20), Italy (20), Switzerland (17), and France (16).
